Can you clean a Colorbond roof?
Answered by Luke at Westside Roof Cleaning & Soft Wash, with more than 12 years on Perth roofs.
Yes. Colorbond and other metal roofs can be cleaned, and soft washing is the right way to do it. Low pressure and a suitable cleaning solution remove mould, lichen, dust and oxidisation without scratching or stripping the painted finish, which high-pressure blasting can do.
Why Colorbond needs cleaning
Colorbond doesn’t grow moss as readily as tiles, but it still collects dust, salt, leaf stains and black mould, especially on lighter colours like Surfmist and along ridges, hips and gutters. Older roofs can also become chalky or “powdery” as the paint oxidises.
How we clean it
- Check the roof, fixings and gutters.
- Soft wash with a solution suited to painted steel.
- Rinse gently, working with the run of the sheets.
- Clear gutters if they’re included in your quote.
Things to avoid
- High-pressure jets close to the surface, which can damage the paint and lift sealant.
- Harsh scrubbing, which leaves marks on the finish.
- Walking on the sheets in the wrong places, which can dent them.
Patio roofs too
We also clean Colorbond patio and carport roofs, including the underside. See how to clean a patio roof, or our roof cleaning service.
